Chapter Thirteen

I SPENT THE NEXT TWO weeks dividing my time between training, soaking up everything Mariah had to teach me, and trying to live a normal college life. It helped that time passed differently at the academy, but it was wearing on me. I was cramming thirty hours into twenty-four, and the lack of sleep and the beating my body and mind were taking during training sessions was brutal.

On days I wasn’t trotting the globe or studying politics and spy games with Mariah, I typically did an hour of group sparring and weapons training with Brigit, along with Oliver, Devin, and Breena when she was available, then an hour of magical training with Lilith. I wasn’t sure which was more grueling. I wasn’t progressing as well with weapons as Brigit expected. I was doing fine with bare hand-to-hand tactics, but I still hadn’t found a weapon I felt comfortable with. I was making up for that with how well I was doing on the magical side of things, though, but being a natural overachiever was taking its toll. Nobody gave me so much as an inch, and every session pushed me to my limits.

I was enjoying a rare afternoon off, since my chemistry professor had gone into labor that morning, so I was spending it studying and chilling. Cody had classes all day, so it was just Emma and me.

We’d decorated our room with bright pink and blue beanbag chairs and bought lap desks because we didn’t really have room for one, let alone two, regular desks and chairs. I put my hands on the floor behind me and arched my back, wincing when my stiff, sore muscles protested.

“I don’t know how I’m going to keep this up,” I told her. “I have a bio test tomorrow that I’ve barely studied for, and I fell asleep in chemistry today. I’m having a hard enough time understanding the content without missing half of it because I’m too exhausted to stay awake. And poor Cody. We were watching a movie last night—the first time we’ve spent any real time together in days—and I fell asleep halfway through. Plus, he noticed a bruise on my shoulder from where Oliver whacked me with a broadsword. There’s not much that matches that shape. I told him I fell in the shower, but that’s lame. Everybody knows that’s what people say when they don’t want to confess what really happened.”

She pressed her lips together and her brown eyes lit with compassion. “I know what Melody said, but you don’t have to do it, you know. There are others. Don’t let her guilt you into giving your life away.”

I didn’t know how to explain what I felt. It wasn’t that she was guilting me into it. I had such a sense of obligation that I didn’t feel like it would be right to say no. Yes, there were others, but now they were starting to feel like friends, and I couldn’t just walk away from them because I was tired.
